Some consumers prepare for emergency power outages with an electric generator as a standby/backup system to keep their illumination and appliances running until their regular electricity resumes.
An electric generator may save the food in your refrigerator or freezer from ruin, allow you to keep a home office operating or power emergency safety equipment. Electric power generators can be extremelyexpensive and annoyingly noisy. They may also be a serious safety hazard to you and others. Follow all manufacturer safety instructions to the letter.
Most local regulations require that a consumer, with a permanently installed or portable generator, not connect it to another power source, such as the electric company's power lines. If you operate an electric generator, you are responsible in the event that electricity from your unit "backfeeds" or flows into utility power lines. You must be certain to use your standby generator in the correct manner. If you refuse to do so, you risk property damage and endangerment of your life and the lives of utility company workers who may be working on energy sources some distance away.
